Summer Gadgets
Waterproof Floating Phone
This is pretty neat..if you’re into that sort of thing. I don’t even have a pool and I think this is really cool.
Who wants to get out of the pool to answer the phone? (Or even the shower, for that matter?)
Hammacher Schlemmer sells an $80 cordless phone built with waterproof plastic and rubber grips. If you drop it in the water, it floats and keeps on working.
The phone has all the standard features of any conventional wireless landline phone, including an LCD and 10-number speed dial, support for call waiting and Caller ID, 20-channel autoscan and operation on the 5.8-GHz frequency. Buttons are backlit, so it’s easy to use in the dark.
Wireless Flex Keyboard
Wow, just when I thought gadgets couldn’t get more useless…here comes a water resistant flexible keyboard. Why would you be typing in the shallow end anyway?
Super Battery
This thing is neat. I can think of a million and one uses for this device.
This 5-volt, rechargeable, NIMH battery ($35 from Herrington Catalog) gives you 700 amps of current. You can use it to charge your iPod or other music player for an extra five hours of playtime, or your cell phone for up to five extra hours of talk time.
When you’ve drained it, you can recharge it by plugging it in overnight, or turn the crank to generate power without an electrical outlet. Two minutes of cranking gives you about five minutes of cell phone talk time.
At just under five pounds, the Super Battery is 4 by 3 by .75 in. and charges anything that can be charged via USB. It also features an emergency flashlight.
Sun Visor TV/DVD Player
If you are so boring to your passenger that they would rather watch TV than communicate with you, then this is the perfect sun visor. It can playback DVDs, CD-R’s, MP3s and even allows you to plug in your laptop via the sun visors USB port and play media directly from your laptop. The audio comes through via the built-in FM transmitter. This truly would be a passenger’s delight.
